PREACHING
-We find in Acts 20:7 when the disciples gathered together, Paul preached.
-preached – (Strongs) – dialegomai – to say thoroughly, i.e. to discuss – dispute, preach, reason, speak
-When we gather together on the first day of the week, there is to be preaching – the presenting of God’s
word.
-God’s has revealed His truths through preaching:
-Titus 1:1-3 - God has made His will known through preaching.
-preaching – (Vines) – kerugma – “a proclamation by a herald” – “a message, a preaching”
-Romans 16:25-27
-mystery – something that was unknown or hidden and is now revealed
-The mystery was revealed through the preaching of the Gospel.
-The mystery being spoken of is the full acceptance with all rights and privileges being extended
to the Gentiles in the church.
-Col 1:23-29
-Eph 3:3-6
-Acts 26:15-23
-II Tim 3:16-17 – We now have the word of God which is profitable to us and completely furnishes us.
-We need to preach (proclaim) it.
-This should not be restricted to 30 minutes Sunday morning and Sunday evening in our assembly
only but should also be done individually in our daily lives. The early church is an excellent
example of this.
-Acts 8:4 – preaching – (Vines) – euaggelizo – to announce good news – the Gospel
-Notice, in these passages the emphasis on Christ and the Gospel.
-Unfortunately, much preaching has wandered away from this emphasis.
-II Tim 4:2
-Paul told Timothy to preach the word.
-preach – (Vines) – kerusso - “to be a herald” or in general “to proclaim”
-Notice, it was the word that he was to preach.
-Unfortunately, many people preach the doctrines of men rather than the truth of God’s word.
-Timothy was to be instant in season and out of season.
-This shows consistency and persistency.
-in season – (Vines) – eukairos – conveniently (see Mark 14:11)
-out of season – (Strongs) – akairos - inopportunely
-Timothy was to preach the word whether it was convenient or not.
-Reprove, Rebuke, Exhort
-reprove – (Strongs) – elegcho – to confute, admonish – KJV: to convict, convince, tell a fault
-rebuke –(Strongs) – epitimao – to tax upon, i.e. to censure, admonish, forbid - KJV: charge, rebuke
-exhort – (Strongs) – parakaleo – to call near, invite, invoke – KJV: beseech, call for, comfort, exhort
-Through the preaching of the word, one should reprove, rebuke and exhort. However, many lessons are
watered down and very generalized so that they will be easy to hear and pleasing to the listeners.
-This is what Paul warned of when itching ears would not want sound doctrine but fables (stories).
-Rom 10: 13-17
-Through the preaching of the word, faith will be established and a person can learn how to call on the
name of the Lord and be saved.
-I Thess 2:13
-Isn’t this the very reason that Jesus sent forth His apostles?
-Matthew 28:18-20
-First of all, let’s realize who Jesus is speaking to – the apostles (vs 16).
-The word “apostles” comes from the Greek word “apostolos” which means (Strongs) – a delegate,
an ambassador of the Gospel; a commissioner of Christ; KJV – apostle, messenger, he that is sent.
(Vines) – one sent forth (from apo – “from”, stello – “to send”)
-This is used to describe Jesus as the One sent from the Father – Heb 3:1 (see Gal 4:4, John 17:3)
-In Acts 14:14 it is applied to Barnabas. He was not one of the twelve but the term is accurately
applied as “one sent forth” – see Acts 13:2-3 (In vs 5 we find they preached the word.)
-The word is usually used in reference to the twelve “apostles” chosen by Christ.
-Luke 6:13
-Matt 10:1-7
-Notice the phrase “sent forth” and the word “go”. And, notice they were to preach.
-preach – (Vines) – kerusso – to be a herald, to proclaim
-Now let’s notice what they were to do:
-Mark 16:15
– “…Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature”
-preach – kerusso
-Matt 28:19 – “…teach all nations”
-teach – (Strongs) – matheteuo – being the disciple of a person, made the disciple of a person,
make a disciple of a person
-ASV – “Go ye therefore and make disciples”
-Acts 14:21 – KJV – “and had taught many”; ASV – “and had made many disciples”
-To make disciples, the apostles needed to preach the word (Rom 10:17).
-The avenue of becoming a disciple is obedience to the Gospel – Matt 28:19, Mark 16:16
-They were then to teach them all things -what Jesus had commanded them. (Matt 28:20).
-teaching – (Vines) – didasko – to give instruction, (Strongs) – to teach
-Acts 15:35 – Here we find both teaching (didasko) and preaching (euaggelizo).
-They were to teach the people to observe.
-observe – (Vines) – tereo – a) to watch over, preserve, keep, watch b) “to observe, give heed to”
as in keeping commandments
-They were to observe something in particular – What Jesus had commanded – the Doctrine of Christ.
-The Example of Acts 2
-Acts 2:14-21 – Peter explains what the people were witnessing – fulfillment of Joel 2.
-Acts 2:22-36
-Is Peter preaching or teaching? Proclaiming or instructing? (These can blend together.)
-Primarily, Peter is proclaiming/preaching the Gospel.
-Then the question is asked, “…what shall we do?”.
-Acts 2:38-41 – Making disciples – Obedience to the Gospel - includes baptism
-Acts 2:42 – “continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine” – teaching them to observe all things
-This is the same process we should follow: Proclaim the Gospel, Make Disciples, Teach
