Satan - Deceitful

 

-Deceitfulness of the Devil

-deceit – Rev 12:9

-Variations of Deceitfulness:

            -that which gives a false impression

            -bait or snare

            -deceitful workers

            -deceive with empty words

            -to deceive by fancies

            -to lure

            -to corrupt

            -to go away, astray, wander

-At the heart of all of the devil’s activity is deceit in one for or another.

-Truth overcomes deceit. – John 14:6

 

-God Abhors Deceit – The Devil Uses Deceit

-Psalm 5:4-6

-Rom 1:29

-Deceit is void of anything profitable – Col 2:4-8

            -vs 4 – enticing words – Satan entices us to turn away from God.

            -vs 8 – vain deceit – empty, without profit

-In the first book of the Bible and in the last book, Satan is described as one who deceives.

            -Gen 3:1, Rev 12:9

 

-To Better Understand the Works of Satan We Need to Understand Deceit

-In the Greek language, there are several words used for deceit – each with its own distinct meaning:

1.  Apate – (Vines) – to cheat, deceive, beguile – that which gives a false impression

            -Riches – Matt 13:22 (Mark 4:19)

                        -1 Tim 6:10

                        -Matt 19:24

            -Sin – Heb 3:8-14

            -Lusts – Eph 4:17-23

                                    -vs 18 – alienated – Satan wants us to be separated from God.

                                    -vs 22 – deceitful lusts  -  The lusts were not actually the driving factor in their wrong

  lifestyles.  It was the deceitfulness which gave a false impression to the lusts.

            -Unrighteousness – 2 Thess 2:1-3, 8-12

           

 

2.  Dolos – deceit as a bait or a snare

            -The bait or the snare generates within the heart – Mark 7:14-23 

                        -That is why we must take God’s word to heart. 

                        -Mark 12:30

                        -Paul includes this word in the list of sins found in Rom 1:28-32.

 

-Verbs:

 

1.  apatao – (Vines) – “to beguile, deceive” - of those who deceive with empty words

            -Eph 5:6

                        -Vain words lead us away from obedience to God.

                        -Satan wants to lead us away from God.

                        -2 Tim 4:1-4

            -This word can also be used to indicate self-deceit – Jas 1:26.

            -A strengthened form of this word (exapatao – to deceive wholly, beguile thoroughly) is used in 2

        Cor 11:3 and 1 Tim 2:14 to describe Satan’s deceiving of Eve.

                        -1 Tim 2:14 – Adam (apatao), Eve (exapatao)

 

2.  doloo – (Vines) – to corrupt, especially by mingling the truths of the Word of God with false

doctrines or notions and so handling it deceitfully

            -2 Cor 4:1-2

-Matt 15:9

            -Matt 4:6

     

3.  dolio – (Vines) – to lure – as by a bait

      -Rom 3:13

 

4.  planao – (Vines) – to go astray, (active) to deceive by leading into error, to seduce

            -Matt 24:4, 5, 11, 24

            -1 John 3:7

            -Rev 12:9

            -1 Cor 6:9, 15:33

            -Gal 6:7

            -Jas 1:16

 

5.  paralogizomai – (Vines) – to reckon wrong, to reason falsely (para = amiss, logizomai – to reason)

            -Col 2:4

            -Jas 1:22

 

6.  deleazo – (Vines) – to catch by a bait, to beguile, to entice by blandishments

            -Jas 1:14 – enticed
