Richard’s Remarks - The Deity of Christ
Over the
years, I have encountered a number of individuals who believe in Jesus as
the Son of God but
fail to understand that He is indeed Deity. Consider the following passages
that attest to the Deity of Jesus:
“In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the
beginning with God...And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us...”
(John 1:1-2, 14). These
verses display an equality between the Father and Son.
While
confronting the Jewish leaders, “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, Before
Abraham was, I am.” The phrase “I am” was used by the Father to identify
Himself to Moses -
“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM : and he said, Thus shalt thou say
unto the children
of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you” (Ex 3:14). Clearly, Jesus was
identifying Himself as Deity.
When Thomas
was able to see and feel Jesus’ wounds following His resurrection, he said,
“My Lord
and my God” (John 20:28). Jesus did not rebuke Thomas for identifying Him
as God. Clearly, He is
a part of the Godhead.
Colossians
2:9, in speaking of Jesus, says: “For in him dwelleth all the fullness of
the Godhead bodily.”
Jesus was in the body of a man, yet He was still Deity.
In describing
Jesus’ perfect example of humility, Paul wrote, “who, although He existed in
the form of
God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped” (Phil 2:6, NASB).
It’s not that He did
not have equality with the Father. The point is, He was willing to leave it
behind. Instead, He “...emptied
Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant (Phil 2:7).
Hebrews 1:8
contains the words of the Father regarding this particular subject: “But
unto the Son, he saith,
Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever, a sceptre of righteousness is the
sceptre of thy kingdom.” Notice,
our Heavenly Father refers to Jesus as “God.” Clearly, Jesus is indeed
Deity - a part of the Godhead.
