Richard’s Remarks –Irony and The Sons of Korah
In our studies of the book of Psalms, we have noted that a number of the Psalms are credited to the “sons of Korah.” With this fact comes a bit of irony.
The scriptures tell us that “…the son of Korah, and his brethren, of the house of their father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle…” (1 Chron. 9:19). In 1 Chronicles 6:31-32, we are told, “And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest. And they ministered before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing, until Solomon had built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem: and then they waited on their office according to their order” (1 Chron. 6:31-32). 1 Chronicles 6:33then names “Heman” in particular - “a singer” - and lists his genealogical information which includes Levi. So, these were of Levitical descent and therefore responsible for the service to God in the tabernacle and the temple. However, also listed amongst Heman’s ancestors is “…Korah, the son of Izhar…” (1 Chron. 6:37-38). Therefore, Heman was considered a son of Korah.
Now, let’s consider some brief information regarding this "Korah, the son of Izhar.” In Numbers 16:1-2, he is listed amongst those that “rose up before Moses.” In Numbers 16:32, we read of the death of Korah “and all the men that appertained unto Korah.” Later, Numbers 26:11 tells us “Notwithstanding the children of Korah died not.” His lineage was allowed to continue and eventually produced some of the Psalms’ authors.
Now there’s some irony! Or, perhaps we should refer to it as the providence of God.
