The Observance of Memorial Day

Just about any “holiday” carries varying degrees of meaning and significance.  Such is the case with the Memorial Day weekend.  For some, the true meaning of the weekend seems to get lost in the shuffle of an extra day off work, family get-togethers, picnics, trips to the lake, etc.  Yet, for others, there is great significance in this weekend - a significance that dwells within the heart and mind in terms of reflection and remembrance.

I have been very fortunate in terms of not suffering much tragedy in my life.  I hope and pray that such a pattern will continue.  However, I know that many have suffered great tragedy on my behalf.  I make that statement in view of the many veterans who have paid the ultimate price for the freedom and rights that I enjoy on a daily basis.  Occasions such as Memorial Day weekend help me to better remember and appreciate their sacrifices.  In addition to those veterans that gave their lives, I know that we have many veterans - several within our congregation - that have served this country and its principles dutifully and diligently.  Let’s always remember that they, too, made extreme sacrifices for you, me and others around this world.  Let’s be thankful and appreciative of all that they have done.  At this very moment, we have many soldiers in harm’s way fighting for the principles of freedom and democracy.  Let’s continue to be prayerful in their regard.

Even though I haven’t faced much tragedy in my life, I know that there are those within our number who have.  Even though I cannot relate to your situations, I feel for you and hurt with you.  We all should.  As the apostle Paul penned, “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep” (Rom 12:15).  Continue to lend support and encouragement to our hurting brothers-and-sisters-in-Christ.  Remember that their hurting doesn’t go away.  Neither should our support and encouragement.  A kind word, a simple phone call, a card or a visit sure can go a long way.  And, of course, continue to be prayerful for these individuals as well.

For us, as Christians, each Lord’s Day provides us with the opportunity to remember and reflect upon the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior with the observance of the Lord’s Supper.  Yet, Memorial Day provides an additional opportunity for reflection and prayer regarding Jesus.  Consider reading some passages pertaining to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.  Reflect upon some our songs pertaining to those events.  And, be sure to express your thanks through the avenue of prayer.
